I picked this up for 20$(figured with the silver melt not much loss margin) it is in fairly nice shape but looks possibly cleaned, at least on the obverse. And the scratch is fairly heavy and noticable so I figure it would definitely drop the grad a fair bit.

What would you grade this roughly with the damage? I assume it is only worth melt as the more modern 1$ coins seem to be only collectable in MS+ state, but I didn't have one and the high graded coins were marked up well more then I would want to pay.

As you say, unless in MS condition, they are only worth melt anyway
so the scratch cannot lower the value any, but it does lower the appearance.

Well when I start a dollar collection I'll have a couple worth melt to start it then lol, for 20$ I figured no big loss for a filler. Thanks JimmyD.
