I recently acquired a 'token' for the Dundee Steam Laundry. That's Dundee in Scotland.

Dundee-Steam-Laundry-/-S.-D.-Childs

The laundry first appeared in the 1880 directory and is listed well into the 20th century. It is not clear what the purpose of the piece was as it doesn't seem to have any value. It was possibly just attached to bags of laundry to stop them going astray.

It is unlike other Scottish in appearance and this may be due to the fact that the maker's signature on the piece is S. D. CHILDS - CHICAGO U.S.A.

It is quite unusual for a British company to have its 'tokens' made in the United States. Can anyone give me an idea of when this maker might have used this signature so that I can try and date the piece.

@token, there is a pretty interesting (and relevant) thread on this die sinker over on the forums. Here is an excerpt from the beginning of that thread, with all of the acknowledgements intact:

And here is a link to some genealogical information on S D Childs mentioned downthread:

Many thanks for the pointers to information on S. D. Childs.

Both that company and the Dundee Steam Laundry were in operation for many years so unfortunately it does not narrow down the possible date of issue of the token.

The laundry has long gone and is now a piece of grassed parkland.
