Hi..I am slowly learning here. I believe I read in the forum that nickles were not made with a clad composition... Given this was shortly after WW2 I began wonder if there any years around that time where copper could have "splashed in the mix" like what an untrained eye could suspect because this is a '47.

So I ask... what in tarnation do I have here? My assumption is a dirty coin.

The composition of a 1947 nickel is .750 copper and .250 nickel. It was (and is) not a layered "clad". What you have on your coin is a stain or chemical splash from environmental conditions, this is not a mint error, it's just post mint damage.

Looks like some sort of stain. PMD
Not something that would happen during the striking of the coin.

Agree this is some sort of post-mint staining.

Photos are good, but we always ask for images of the entire coin, both sides, and full-size close ups of areas of interest.

I agree with almost all of the above estimates as to what happened to this coin.

It is just staining, or maybe paint splashed on it.

Noted about the photos.. I picked up a usb digital microscope at a fair price for coin hunting..

For the rest of the replies I had a very strong suspicion this was sone form PMD like a stain... the strong copper coloring and the way it reminded me of unmixed paint raised an eyebrow..

Well back to the grind..
