I found this '44 D in a penny roll, both the obverse and reverse have very fat characters, but the color looks great given it's a '44. Was this flattened by a machine post-mint or a car or something? It's surprising that the color looks so nice if so. I'd appreciate any thoughts, thanks!
IF how this is done (my guess) the coin was probably squeezed with two pieces of leather on each side of the coin in a vise. Thus flattening the devices, but not enlarging the diameter of the coin. I don't have a vise to prove that, but someone may confirm this using a copper planchet coin before 1981. Take before and after images and post them. I'll add them to my educational files.
