Yes, it's a die crack, but I had thought previously that side was considered the obverse? Or have I been backwards?

As far as my understand goes, the side with the date and or portrait is normally considered the obverse

I have always understood that for coins with a coat of arms but no portrait, the side with the coat of arms is the obverse.

Thus for German, Austrian and Russian coins like this, the "eagle side" is the obverse.
