Hello all!

I have a 1944 Wheat that I believe is a DDO. My questions are 1) is it a DDO? and 2) if it is, which one is it?

I think it might actually be a new one. Notice the split serifs of the fours and the apparent doubling of the nine on the inside of the nine.

I might post some more photos later, but for now this one is all I have:

Thanks!

I actually found this the same day that I found that really nice DDR 1944 Wheat cent (in my Wheat cent stash of around 6 rolls). I just never got around to figuring out if it was a doubled die.

Master die hub alteration on on the '44':

On other years if the 1940's they were enhancing the dies to buy more time out of the master hub that was swelling:

The same master hub was nursed along to to prevent creating a new master hub from the galvano.

In 1969 there was a new one created that year. Thus ending the alteration of the older master hub. When die productions were increased in the 1960's they finally created a new one.

So on the years mentioned, they enhanced some of the devices and with the fresher die examples you could see that this happened. As the dies continued to age, then they enhancements were harder to see. But all the dies of that year were created from the same master hub that was altered. (even proofs were affected the same) Die wear hid a lot of this, thus little was known about this at the time.

When you find nicer die states and BU coins, you could replace them and put the circulated examples into the wheat pile?
