Hello New friends,
I too am new- new to the hobby of numi- numa-- ya know that coin collecting jig! I have been doing research on a small jar my boy friend had hidden away from my 5 year old- LOL- and came across this 1998 D nickel. my first time going over them I hadnt noticed, but the second time I realized part of his face was missing! the details of his face are gone, at first I chalked it up to have been flattened a bit by years, or maybe someone smooshed it, but its just odd when it catches the light it almost seems like it wasnt 'pressed' (please excse my awful lingo, still learning) completely. there is also a nice sized gouge in between where his hair and should/neck meet that could also be just a typical rough handling issue. When I turned it over to the--reverse? Reverse side it is basically the same, the smaller details are missing especailly near the three middle windows/doors. And Montecello is actually Mo------lo infact the whole back seems to be almost compleatly flat, including the fin?--i think fin- but the rim is what I'm trying to et at. I wanted to say its definatly not what I think but just the way it catches light makes me hopeful that I got a little lucky and might have found something kind of cool. Any help is so appriciated! I put my email here so it is avalable to y'all if you have any clue as to what has happened to poor ol' Jefferson! I will try to get the best pictures with my tablet but wont be able to take bettter ones until my husband gets home from work this evening.
Thank you for your time! Also dont hesitate to correct my lingo! I have been researching for almost 3 days and never had a lot of interest before that!
Happy collecting friends!
-Ausie

Measure it with another cent to see if it is the exact size on the outside edge of the coin. If so, it may have been altered.

On the zinc cents if the diameter is altered, then the plating will fall of the zinc cents:

If the edge of the coin is thinned in certain areas, it may have been altered. So many coins get damaged and are just worth face value. Even hard dent/scratch/coin damage can turn the coin can turn it into a cull coin. So if it looks like the edge is bent it may have been altered. Keep the best coins and get rid of the post strike damaged coins. They sometimes get taken to the garage, and worked over. Those are not keepers.
