I was cleaning out my attic the other day and discovered 2 coins with ancient looking writing on them. they are circular with what possibly looks similar to like a hole punch on the inside, but it is square. Does anyone know what these are and if they are worth money?

Well, there are both fake and real versions of Chinese Cash coins.

Mind posting a pic?

Round coins with square holes" in the centre, known as "cash coins, are a distinctively Chinese invention; for over 2,000 years, this is what Chinese coins looked like. Cash coins with much the same design were also made in Japan, Korea and Vietnam.

Without seeing a pic, it's impossible to tell when and where your coin came from, but have a look at the coins in this thread and see if they look similar to any of them; those are what genuine Chinese cash coins look like.

That coin is a K'ai Yuan cash coin. Joel Anderson uses a K'ai Yuan coin with a very similar design as his business logo.

Yep. Kai Yuan Tong Bao coins were issued during the Tang Dynasty from 621 to 907 AD. Being issued for such a long time, they're fairly common and cheap, despite being so old.

An expert in the series can give an approximate date of roughly when in that time period the coin would have been struck. I'm nowhere near expert enough to do that.
