coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 11/12/2021 11:54 am If you see the same event happening on the tops of the date devices, then it is Machine Doubling. Try making a side by side of the normal mintmark for that year and see if the shape of the mintmark was altered by Machine Doubling. Keep in mind a RPM will enlarge the device, Machine Doubling will reduce the size of a mintmark. Take a look at these listings by V.V to helps show something: http://www.varietyvista.com/02a%20L...1SRPM001.htm Note stage 'A' and 'B' on the tops of the mintmarks. You see one like your on the top of the mintmark on stage 'A', but on the stage 'B' it the tops of the devices are different? Why? Well that area is not part of the RPM. The RPM is west. Note both coins are showing the same "west" RPM. But the stage 'A' coin has Machine Doubling on the top of the mintmark and probably the date as well. The mintmark is a separate step in die creation. So if you see the same doubling direction on the mintmark and the date, it is 100% of the Machine Doubling. Knowing these detective skills will help solve issues quicker. I got what Coop is saying to watch for the same on the date but it's not their..I'm a novice so I'll take my cue from the experts and move to the next Error in my pile! Thanks foe the Lesson Coop!
