Post your THREEs here! Many of the broken banks produced $3 bills in their time, some with very attractive designs. I got this at an ANA show in Portland more than 10 years ago, along with a bunch of other cheap stuff that had nice engravings on them. Notes denominated in THREE are one of the things I go for. (Apologies for the cell phone pic here)

The OP's note is from the Bishop Hill Colony located in Henry County Illinois, which was first settlement of Swedes in that state. Remainders of this note are fairly inexpensive, even in uncirculated grades. My note is a $3 remainder issued by The Tallahassee Railroad Company and printed by the American Bank Note Company. A colorful note with an elaborate design printed on the back, which was unusual at the time.

A superb note in nice grade. Some of the engraving and printing on these notes was as good as that of the Federal notes from imo.

Interesting design. Is that guy supposed to be the survivor of a shipwreck? The connection with a railroad is not at all clear!

Yes, now that I think of it - there should be a train on it!

Maybe a lot of their business was shipping goods to Gulf ports? Even if so, it is still a "funny" choice.

The Tallahassee Railroad Company serviced a 22 mile route from Tallahassee to Port Leon. It started in the mid-1830s and was purchased in 1869 by the Florida Central and Western Railroad Company. There's a train featured on the $1 and $2 notes. Here's the 4-subject sheet.

This is a three dollar note issued by the Harmony Institute in Harmony, Pennsylvania (Butler County) in 1817. The Harmony Institute was a religious girls school.
