I recently came across this framed collection of European banknotes from 1985, before the Euro was created. It features the following banknotes: 20 Danish Kroner (Pauline Tutein) (withdrawn in 1990), 100 Belgian Francs (Hendrik Beyaert), 100 Luxembourgish Francs, 500 Greek Drachma (1968), 5 British Pounds (still in use), 2,000 Italian Lira (Duemila), 5 Dutch gilder, 20 French Francs, 1 Irish pound, 5 Deutsch marks.

Do you think these would have much value to a collector? They're in excellent but not mint condition.

Hello orcabloom and

It makes a nice display but I don't think it has a huge amound of collector value - it appears to be a collection of each of the lowest value notes from each country that were in circulation around 1990. A dealer might charge about £10 for the Somerset signature Bank of England £5 note, and the Irish £1 note should be worth a few pounds. Some notes, like the German 5 marks, can still be exchanged for Euros in their country of origin, whereas others, like the French 20 francs, have been demonetised and are of no value other than to a collector.

Some of those notes are well-circulated. This kind of display is a good way to use such notes. They are essentially collectibles rather than collector's notes.

Interesting, but yeah not much value. Most of those notes are low or the lowest denomination. The 5 Guilders, 20 Kroner, 500 Drachma, Irish Punt, 20 Francs and 5 Marks were all replaced by coins before the Euro and that sums it up really. The other notes are 1 step above the highest coin like the 100 Francs of Belgium and Luxembourg and the 2000 Lire of Italy.

Plus they are not all UNC and most look VF or even high Fine - basically I think someone did a tour of Europe in the 80s and took one note from each country to make up a souvenir collection and they got the cheapest. Had they done their homework and gone for UNC examples or higher face values, it would have some value.

Being 80s - probably a good chance the frame paper is acid and likely stained the notes or they will be stuck to the board as well.

I would realistically sell that for about $20 or so. Ask for $50 on ebay - but you will get $20 or maybe even $30 easily. I mean no one would honestly fly to England or Ireland from America to cash in an old 5 pound or 1 punt note!
