They look cleaned and not natural to me. Looks like it was dipped and is retoning around the edges. Wouldn't surprise me if NGC straight graded this as I've seem much worse in a straight grade holder. I'd say XF details cleaned.

I think these are not original surfaces. Maybe a past dip or wipe with a cloth made this coin look bright and silvery.

I could be wrong, this could be natural wear and the way it was stored to cause this color.

Clearly cleaned but the obverse in particular has a significant amount of it's original patina intact. Likely graded problem-free.

The grader at NGC disagrees. So do I. Although the photo does lend it that "cleaned" color, I can tell under the microscope that the surfaces are original. Wish I had a scope equipped with a camera.

I'm pretty sure this coin spent a very long time in a pocket rubbing against cloth, but was never cleaned.

I respect your opinion, and it will trade straight going forward, but I still think it looks cleaned.

attractive coin.
the photos on NGC site have a different surface look. Most xf or lower au coins have significant small contact marks from being in pockets with change or in a drawer.

Could it have been stored in a non-reactive container that would result in no toning to the silver? Maybe it did a bit of circulating, and then stored a certain way when it was pulled from circulation.

True dat.

It's been cleaned like many, many 19th century coins. The whole market-acceptable argument could last into the 22nd century but in this case I agree with NGC that this piece is market-acceptable. The XF45 grade seems reasonable.

The 45 grade is reasonable. It's a fairly common date, and there are plenty of EF/AU examples out there. On a bourse floor, I wouldn't go full Greysheet, though. I would probably price adjust it closer to EF-40 to allow some margin.
