I'm re-posting this reply from another thread and wanted to get it seen by the membership here at CCF as a whole. My the hopes are that this may get people to look at and see the benefits of joining CONECA if they like errors and varieties. (I hope this is ok with the forum rules.)

LOL! No museum, I honestly I'd love to host a winter variety/error expo. Buy, sell, trade, just for show, whatever. Downside is I have no clue if even a handful of folks would show up so really hard to think how to approach it.

I like your thinking and wonder if the folks at CONECA might have some insight? (The current president is Jason Cuvelier which just might ring a bell with folks.)

I know the CONECA forum has participation that's a little weak but they usually have a table at a lot of coin shows (FUN comes to mind.) The members that man the tables are strong in the community and active members tend to take on a lot of responsibilities.

I would suggest any variety collectors stop by the table and show them some love. This bolsters spirits, strengthens ties, and may lead to connections that will grow over time to help produce the kind of activity TB mentions and a lot of us would enjoy.

Also, as more members join CONECA, more active participants will mean a more vibrant experience for everyone.

Everyone reading this, please consider joining join CONECA if you aren't already a member, and tell them The Coin Community Forum sent you. (They like to know how new members hear about them.)

Hopefully, if you're not a member of CONECA you will be today.

If that is the case, General Discussion (which is restricted view) is not going to work.

I moved this to the Main Coin Forum so all eyes can see it.

Maybe it's due to old age but I never even head of Coneca.

In my experience, specialty collector organizations can be difficult to build and/or maintain. Why?

1. With all of the free resources that have been made available via the internet, many of today's collectors believe they have access to all they need to answer/support their hobby questions/needs and, thus, don't feel the need for a formal organization that has a membership fee and annual dues.

2. Most specialty organizations are national (or at least regional) in nature that meet infrequently (if at all). Without regular, face-to-face meetings, building a strong sense of camaraderie among members is difficult at best. IMO, camaraderie among collectors plays an important role in keeping organizations vital and why the best local coin clubs thrive.

3. For most collectors, budgets are focused on the areas of interest. Doing things for the general "good of the hobby" is not high on the priority list for many (I say this based on conversations I've had with other collectors). So, unless a collector has a collecting interest in errors and varieties, the likelihood of them joining CONECA just to "help out" the organization is low. For me personally, there are lots of numismatic organizations out there - I can't support them all! I happily send my money in to clubs/organizations aligned with my interests but have to draw the line somewhere.

I like the fact that CONECA exists, it's good to know that collectors of errors and varieties have a "home." I'm not such a collector, however, and so, a membership in the organization is not likely for me.

IMHO, CONECA burned some bridges with some collectors when it terminated Dr. Wiles' attribution contract. Regardless of any reasons that may have existed, it was (and is) a PR mess.
