Despite what looks like some areas of corrosion, I became enamored by the low mintage (1,926) and bold die cracks on the reverse of this 1652 French ecu. An additional charm is that the Limoges mint blundered the obverse legend (F. FR. ET. NAV. REX) by adding an extra F. Most likely a coin that only a crazy specialist could love.
(Still in the mail, seller's photos).

I am a generalist, not a specialist.
Nevertheless, I do have a small number of French hammered and milled coins.

My opinion of this coin :- I would be very happy to have it in my collection.

A not very expensive reference book that would be of great help to a specialist;
'Coinage in France from the Dark Ages to Napoleon', by Nicholas Mayhew, publ. by Seaby 1998, ISBN 0-900652-87-X
164 pages 296 coin illustrated throughout the text.

Krause World Coins volumes 1601-1700 and 1701-1800 also very useful for illustrations.

The 1652-I ecu arrived today and is resting comfortably with his brethren from 1652.
