I use freebies, Picassa and Microsoft Digital Image starter edition.
I also use a Kodak EasyShare 7440 digital camera, but the most important thing I bought at Walmart was a $14 Targus tripod, which adjusts from 9" to 40+". I keep it at 9-12" and it keeps the camera steady. One of the threads on here suggests using the self-timer so you don't have your hands on the camera and it's stable at shutter release.
You won't increase the quality of your picture with software. If you are not using the tripod, get one, no one's hands are perfectly steady. When you are shooting a 2" coin even the slightest movement will blur the image, and no software can fix that.
