I like the 2nd picture much better. I'm sure eventually you will get it. Just takes time to get to know the functions of the new camera.

Hi 50cents

You could not have chosen a tougher coin to practice with !

try getting used to your camera with some brown copper coins , and then progess to the tougher surfaces like the Ike !

the brown copper is much easier to light correctly and provides a less reflective surface to adjust to and play withthe different settings on your camera with .

when you get an accurate representation of the color of the copper in your picture then maybe try the Ike again .

I also like the second better and it looks plenty sharp , the lighting is what is affecting the color and appearance of the silver your light based on the photo is high and to the right can you also light the coin from lower and from the left ? this will take the shadows away from the lower portion of the devices and not make such a large black outline .

Are you shooting raw or using jpeg? Some cameras have different levels of sharpening in jpeg mode.

with Learjet, and I think your new camera works fine.
On the second new camera image, the whitepoint is set a bit towards blue, the contrast is a softer curve, and the internal sharpening is lower (or set to off).
But lower contrast and less sharpening is not a bad thing if you want to process pics in photoshop.
I prefer the photo from your new camera, because it would give me more data to work with.
As an example, I took the pic by your new camera, and put it through a quick
levels/color balance/curves/sharpening processing--all of 5 minutes work:

That is not necessarily true...it depends on the camera, lens, and how far away you put the camera. The best results on my camera, and on many of cameras out there, are obtained by moving the camera away a bit from the piece, zooming in, and NOT using macro mode.

The primary problem with putting the camera too close to the piece is you block a lot of light.

Now if I could get a good DSLR and a *real* macro lens. :)

Only the very best photographers among us achieve consistently superior results without using at least a little post-processing. I freely admit that I'm not one of those photographers.

Thanks, Dave...

I just don't see that much different between a good Point&Shoot and a SLR,
Maybe in time.

This would be a good time for you to share your lighting technique. That Lincoln is just about perfectly lit. 2 lights at 10:00 and 2:00?

Nothing special in my setup.

Reveal 65W 120V lights at 10 and 2 for BU coins and 1 light at 12 for circulated. I also use Ott-Lite srew in bulbs on some coins.
Here is the setup with the old camera.
