As many of you know I'm a little crazy for the Two Cent Pieces. Errors in the series are extremely rare and only a handful of major errors exist in the entire series.

I know of less than a dozen off center coins, maybe 4 or 5 wrong planchet or double denominations, as for capped dies and brockages maybe a couple or three, out of around 45 million coins struck. When compared to other coins of the era like Indian Head cents, shield nickles and others, which have lots of errors, this is unusual.

Well a couple major Two Cent errors are coming up for sale through Heritage Auctions. I'm looking forward to seeing how much they bring, and maybe getting to see them in person as well.

I've only seen a couple errors like this sell over 4 decades of looking out for them now. These are pretty neat errors so I thought I'd share them here, I am NOT bidding on them, way out of my price range. If anyone here is, feel free to gift them to me for Christmas.

First up is a really neat capped die Two Cent Piece of 1864 Large Motto (reminds me of an old soda pop bottle cap):

Next is an 1866 Two Cent Piece struck on a cent planchet:

Not a Two Cent Piece but also a really interesting error in this auction is a cracked planchet Three Cent Nickel. I have a Walking Liberty half dollar similar to this coin in my own collection:

and last a detailed undated and off center Shield nickel with a retained die break:

The up coming auction has a lot of Lincoln Cent and Jefferson nickle errors in it, lots to browse if error coins are your thing. The past few error sales Heritage has held had almost no Two Cent errors in them, including the large multi part sales of my friend Don Bonser's collection of error coinage. This is exciting to see for me and hopefully for some of you as well.

You and me both. There are only a few of them around I have photos of most of them this one is really clean and well formed. some others have cracks and aren't as well centered for the error.

I think the price will eclipse $20,000 before it's over, probably close to or just over $30K the price for a lower graded Small Motto proof, as these are just about as rare.

Cool items, Westcoin! While I've long prized and avidly collected error coins, the only true history I tend see in these more costly ones is provenance, who could afford to own them. Might these truly be error coins or struck to order?

Be it coins or whatever, mistakes can be costly .... three ex-wives proved that to me!

So the bids are in, and they were some strong prices for the error coins I mentioned above.

The capped Two Cent error hammered at $45,600.00

The double struck Two Cent error ended at $18,000.00

The split planchet 3CN finished at $960.00

The off center detail Shield nickel was $336.00

All prices include the buyers fee.

The capped error went for $15K over my high estimate, a coin I'd love to own, but also knew I had no chance at it, it's way out of my comfort zone for price. The double struck was surprisingly high as well in my thoughts I figured around $7500 or so, more than double again.
