Hi,
I picked up this quite nice 2 Kroner from Norway 1914

Would anyone know who the figure on the reverse is supposed to be? Also what mint it was minted at?

thanks

That's a nice coin, one of the most popular to collect of Norwegian coins. It was minted to commemorate the Norwegian constitution of 1814.

The female figure is "Mother Norway", the personification of the Norwegian nation. Like all Norwegian coins it was minted in the Norwegian mint in Kongsberg (if you look closely just above the R in NORGE, the Kongsberg mintmark is visible: crossed hammers).

That's great - many thanks. I had thought it might be a personification given the significance of what it is commemorating and their huge size given the tiny trees at the lower right for scale.

While a commemoration coin I believe it also circulated. Quite a low mintage too.

Yes, comparatively low mintage, but intended for circulation. Collectors stashed them away, but otherwise they were used just like any other coin. Good specimens carry a premium.

Lovely coin.

I love the heraldry one-upsmanship of giving a lion an axe (as if they weren't already fearsome enough )
