Hi,
Just purchased this 1918 sovereign.
The mint mark is quite.... strange.
Any sugestions what it should be? M? I?
Did anyone saw something like this?
Thx :)

I would say it was an "I" for Bombay India.

I'd say it is an M with very weak uprights on each side of the V for Melbourne.

with JimmyD.
When I enlarge the photo of my 1918-I sovereign, the mintmark looks similar, although with the naked eye it looks like a capital I.

Looks like an I with a very well placed ding or die chip that has worn down or didn't fully strike..making it a little tough to figure out.
Feel free to call me Will.

The "I " is the only mm that has serifs and that sovereign definitely shows a serif so it has to an "I".

:)
Thank you for the comments.
Im glad I bought it then. The Bombay mint striked more than 1 mln sovereign in only 1 year in the XX century. Mayby its why such flaw.
Happy to have such an interesting sovereign. I hope this mark error is not so common and mayby it will gave the coin some extra premium :)
Im thinking about grading it.
