I picked this up last week at a great coin shop near Fort Campbell. It's in an older NGC holder. Graded MS69. It has a great finish, steller coin. You can see these scratches in the field with the naked eye in the correct light.

I just want to confirm and get your thoughts...I'm assumming these are legit die scratches due to the devices not having the scratches too. Am I correct in that assumption?

Thanks

Die scratches would be raised.

I can't tell, as they are so fine, my 10x is not powerful enough to get a close look.
And it's definitely not on the slab, it's on the coin.

Are you saying that this coin is an SMS coin or a S mint mark MS 69 coin? I'm pretty sure that the mint didn't produce any SMS coin in 2009.

As for the scratches, can you get a picture with the light source coming in from a low angle and shining across the scratches? This may show shadows that could reveal if they are raised or incused

This is a 2006-P from a mint set, starting in 2005 they released the "Satin Finish" only in Mint sets. This coin is from that set, hence the SMS moniker. Production was around 800k.

I will try to get that better picture you asked for.

Thanks

Mint sets aren't SMS........ SMS stands for special mint set and was only produced between 1965 to 1967.

For awhile the TPG's did call the satin finish coins SMS. Over the years they have called a lot of issues other then the 1965 - 67 coins SMS/ This could be a satin finish die that was scuffed.
