When I was a eight years old I was very proud of my coin collection. So when a friend asked to "borrow" my 1862 Indian Head penny to show his brother, and never gave it back, I was pretty traumatized. And not only because he was the first kid I ever punched in the face.

The bad memory meant that I always avoided IHCs, even as an adult. I just don't enjoy them as much as other coins, I suppose because there is still some deep-seated resentment over the loss of that 1862 penny my grandfather had plucked from circulation in the early 1900s.

*** Edited by Staff | The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. ***

I decided to buy an 1862 IHC, which will be, for now, the only Indian cent in my collection. It is not a particularly significant date, but I do like the nickel-rich alloy of the early pieces. It hasn't arrived yet and these aren't my photos.

So with no real experience assessing IHCs, I have no idea whether I chose well. Did I? It's in an ANACS holder:

Sure I'll agree to AU-55 ,It has 2 obverse issues that I don't care for , but if you like it, that's all that counts .

Looks lightly circulated; I'm on board with AU-55.
The A in States and the first A in America are both very soft, but the 2nd A in America looks normal. I wonder if this is a common feature for this date?

If the example from your grandfather had been in circulation for 40+ years I expect this one is a big upgrade. Welcome back to IHC collecting!

May be a few days before I can get my own pics, so here's what the seller provided:
