Hi guys, would anyone please be able to point me in the right direction of figuring out what this coin is? Its high quality pure gold.feels like 24carat. So very maliable. It is extremely thin. Weighs 18grams. 49mm in diamater.
I think I recognise the scripting to be a form of arabic.but I may be wrong there as I dont speak or read or write any form of arabic. It just looks to be so in my untrained eyes.
Any help much appreciated!

The year is 1876. It is Ottoman/Turkish, 500 piastre.

While the script is Arabic, the language is not. It's a gorgeous coin.

Thankyou very much for your replies! Too good to scrap then. I bought it about 10 years ago with a brief description of what it was, but lost that little piece of paper, it went in my scrap gold collection to be later on figured out and has sat there ever since. With gold prices as they are at the moment I thought id go through the scrap gold and came across this. Even if it wasnt worth more as a historic coin it would be too good to scrap due to its beauty and condition too. Someone will really enjoy this in their collection I am sure. So thankyou :)

If the said coin has never been on a loop (check the edge) it is worth a lot more than its scrap value to a serious collector. Do not scrap it. Try auction houses.

Thankyou all for your welcomes! I have many coins I will share in the future with you, the majority are coins that I know about. Some not. Nut I'm sure you will all appreciate them.

And yes, its never been on a loop. The edges are as they would have been from new. It is the right wieght too. If anythinf it is a little overweight by 0.1grams, this particular one will be going for sale as I am going to narrow down the collection, so if anyone her is interested in having it privately then of course anyone pn the forum can have first dibs :)

Can anyone provide a catalog reference or an auction reference?
I'm not an expert on Ottoman coins, but I can't find this one and it doesn't look like any I've seen or can find with some simple searches.

Tdziemia the only one that I could find which is the exact same is this one on a current ebay listing... not as good condition and unfortunately had a piece welded to the top as a medal or neckelace pendant. But the coin is identical

My first search was not thorough enough

A genuine one weighs 35-36 g., so yours is also a jeweller's copy. If it is gold, you still have a good chunk of gold worth quite a bit.
