Just a thought - and probably a useless one. Any possibility it's medieval rather than ancient, perhaps an AE cavallo of Ferdinand I of Aragon?

@bob: Most certainly a possibility. It was in a junk box-there was not even an attempt at identification.

Edit: I don't know how you pulled that rabbit out of the hat, but I think that may be it. I'm going to look at the legend area to see if I can turn the shadows into letters.
