Hi everyone. I never have done a deep dive into Buffalo nickels and am seriously considering doing so. I am a big believer in the "buy the book before the coin" philosophy . Can someone recommend the best book on collecting Buffalo nickels? And of course I have tons of postings I can sort through here on CCF which is probably the best resource of all.

Any general advice from hardcore Buffalo hunters on collecting them? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

The book I have is The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels by David Lange, 3rd Edition, 2006.

Is it the best?
I don't know since I don't collect Buffalo nickels.
But Lange is a well-known numismatist.

Wait for input from others.

Ron Pope's book, The Abraded Die Varieties, is an essential guide.

John Wexler, Ron Pope, and Kevin Flynn, The Authoritative Reference on Buffalo nickels is an essential book.

These two, plus David Lange's book, are the Buff library.

For online resources:
The Buffalo nickel Club is a go-to place: https://buffalonickelclub.org/

http://www.varietyvista.com/03%20Bu...ls/index.htm has the best information on varieties. Learning the different obverse design varieties is a worthwhile exercise. it weeds out many of the counterfeits.

Hope this helps!

Westcoin and fortcollins covered all the essentials that I own. All great references!

It's a tough series, but ALOT of fun to collect. You're taking a great approach; read the books, CCF posts, take in as much of the series as you can. I sank awhile before I started swimming, if you can even call it swimming.

A lot of learning in regards to grading has been very hands on, for me. Seeing pictures of graded examples is a great reference, but can be deceptive. There are lots of subtleties to the series that make it exceptional tough to judge without really being hands on. This is especially true in the slider range, AU58-MS63.

Understanding strike and die issues is very beneficial. There were a lot of issues in this series, so recognizing die states in combination with strike quality really lends a hand to grading as well.

Last but CERTAINLY not least. . . Read as many of fortcollins posts/replies to topics on buffs. His knowledge is invaluable, and really gives a great comprehensive breakdown. His ability to breakdown die states so accurately is still beyond me!

Best of luck and post any/all finds!
