This looks like an abnormally strongly struck coin which created quite a bit of finning that has since folded over during circulation. It also appears to be a very slight MAD which could help account for the extra metal. The extra metal along the circumference of the coin would not have been in the way during the strike or else it would have formed to the devices/letters. This is JMHO on this one. I'm not seeing the mint mark being an RPM from your pictures.

@grush, just in case you haven't already looked, here is a link to the appropriate varietyvista page for the '64 D RPMs:

I'm not seeing that on your coin though. To me this looks like a coin struck with a tired die and now exhibiting heavy circulation wear. The extra metal around the rim that is now folded on top of some of the letters is likely mechanical damage, such as is often seen on Dryer Coins.

Spence, I thought about MD and a Dryer Coin as well which is plausible. I steered away from those ideas simply because I'm not sure how either case would, or could, produce a a thin sliver of metal INSIDE (not yelling...lol) of the the rim of the coin which has folded over onto the devices. Predominately what caught my attention was the op's picture of E PLURIBUS where a "foil like' sliver of metal has laid down over the tops of the letters. We may never know.... :) In any event, I don't believe this coin is worth a premium.

I have come across several nickels like this, though this one is more extreme. I don't understand yet how the fin can roll over and keep the rim intact. I had thought coin rolling machines may be plausable I but still don't know for sure.

Ok yep I certainly could be wrong @bump--let's see what others think and then the OP can decide whether we come to a consensus or not. In the meanwhile, here is a link to my all-time fave thread on Dryer Coins (with thanks to @earle42): http://goccf.com/t/143863

I don't think it's a Dryer Coin. It has a large fin that has rolled over. Notice the obverse is slightly MAD.

1964 if I am not wrong it is 75% Cu and 25% Ni (by memory). If someone has near the hand the steps for this year after applying Ni, and I do not mistake (please rectify me). So after Ni was apply the coins go direct in the bin or bags (after dry)and then in the rolling machine.

This coin show heavy circulation and what OP see in my opinion it is due to the small off-set (WE TRUST).

I will go more for rolling machine then the dryer. In any case it is not a mint error or variety.

Please input on this and priority on the first sequence.
