Closing today on ebay is this 1787 Fugio Cent "restrike."

IMHO, this seller-described "restrike" is more appropriately deemed a copy. Its maker, circa 1970-90's, was Peter Rosa of NY City. Rosa made his own dies for many colonial later coins/tokens. He died about thirty years ago, and it's believed that a family member retains the dies.

A master engraver, Rosa stamped many of his products BECKER as a tribute to an early German engraver whom he admired. Rosa's work is appreciated by many collectors, yet the bidding on this item seems disproportionate; this, as it's now approaching the value of genuine Fugio Cents. I have a few of the BECKER copies, purchased at shows for around $20, apiece. I can't help but wonder if some bidders may be confusing this piece with the much earlier New Haven restrikes?

Doesn't this violate ebay's policy prohibiting replica coins, regardless of who made them or when? If somebody made their own dies, it's a replica, not a "restrike."

Perhaps, this is why the seller conveniently calls it a "restrike?"

I've seen a number of BECKER pieces sell on ebay over the years. Typically, they fetch well under a hundred bucks.
