Hi all,

I know fat man dollars are frequently faked, very frequently. I feel like this one has potential, but I bring it to the forum for opinions. I hope it's real, of course, and I'd put it at unc details, maybe as high as MS61 on a good day for me, and as low as au details, if it's even real.

- not magnetic
- weighs 26.8g
- seems to be the right size, slightly greater diameter than a Morgan dollar
- The detail on both sides seems good enough, but I know some fakes can be impressive

I assume the photos will help!

Thank you for the opinions,
N.

@num, it is probably worth getting a specific gravity on this one. As long as you have a good balance, you should be able to do this at home. Please post your results to this thread. Thx!

Hi Spence,

Well, I ran the best specific gravity I could at home. I have two scales, a coin scale that is more precise but it couldn't handle the weight of the water. Then, I have a cooking scale that is less precise but could.

I got a 3g on the wet weight, with no tenths... so 3.0 or 3.8, I don't know. With a 26.9g and 3g, dry/wet, I get a specific gravity of 8.97. Remember, of course, that it is representing a range because of the lack of significant figures.

Best,
N

Ok well, that is a bit in the middle. See below for a link where I compared what I believe to be a real and a fake fatman. On those, I got an sg of 9.9 for the Dollar that I believe is real and 8.0 for the one that I believe is fake.

As a next step, you could bring it to a pawn shop or the like to have them non-destructively assess the silver alloy.

Spence, one more thing about the specific gravity. When I did it, which I did multiple times, the scale would sometimes be at 3g and sometimes at 2g. I mention this because it looks like a 2.7 would be correct for the weight of 26.9g for the coin.

If it's on the 2/3 border, 2.7 seems like a pretty good number.

Hope others chime in, and thanks for leading it off.

You need the weight to 1/100 of a gram, otherwise the uncertainties are too great to be conclusive.

Even better, if you have a know real one, compare the sound spectrum with yours.

Okay, then I cannot perform the specific gravity at home.

When you say sound spectrum, oriole, what do you mean?

From my guess, I can tell you that when it rings on a countertop, it basically has the same pitch as a Morgan dollar. Is that what you'd mean by that?

Don't suppose anyone else would like to give an opinion as to whether or not this is real.

Thanks,
N.

This one looks genuine to me. AU-55 but appears to have been cleaned.
