I have numerous coins in excellent quality and several errored coins. Do you recommend getting these graded to sell or just sell like on ebay. I have 5-15 I would like to have graded. Is it worth the expense? Is it necessary to sell at a good price. I have bought graded coins NGC for $3. How can people have them graded and sell at that price?

Quote: How can people have them graded and sell at that price? I think you may have answered your own question. The general guideline often used on this site is a coin needs to have a minimum retail value of $150 to justify the grading costs.

Please show us some photos of your coins as we might be able to help in whether they are are worth getting graded or not. There are many high grade and minor error coins that would cost more to get grade than they are worth. Show both sides of the coin with one coin per thread.

Quote: I have bought graded coins NGC for $3. How can people have them graded and sell at that price? Those are generally a grading attempt gone bad. I've sent in some coins that graded worse than I anticipated, and ended up with a very expensive plastic coffin for a cheap coin. If there is a lot to gain by grading, such as certain issues that are worth $50 in MS68 and $5,000 in MS 69 (just random numbers being thrown out there not saying this exact example exists), then many people will send in their best hopes of hitting the 69 jackpot. A large percentage of them will end up with MS66/67 coins that are worth $3 or so. My advice to you. Do not send in any coin to any grading company unless you post it here first. Ask the opinion of the community, AND follow their advice. You will save yourself much money and heartache.

@rk, please follow the advice here. It would be a pity to waste a lot of money at a TPG on things that don't have a chance to recoup that investment (if you are in it to flip your finds and make money. If you are not, then it doesn't matter as much). You could also test the waters on ebay with one of your error coins, and see how the market values it. But I would post it here first (as you've done with others in the last month).

Thanks for the responses. Makes good sense. I have got to wait until I get a good macro lense for my iPhone 12 plus which does not have macro. What heading on this sight is the proper place to post coin grade questions?

The $3 coins can be a couple things. Instances were someone got unlucky. Also, some high volume dealers submit coins in bulk and the few that return as MS69-70 they sell for big $, which cover the losses on the other stuff, and you bought "the other stuff".
When I want to get stuff graded, I wait for an ANACS special to roll around that meets my needs, which keeps me at around $10/coin (+9-12 for variety & error attribution if chosen) and I trust ANACS with the grades/values/series that collect as much as NGC or PCGS. This is cheaper than NGC/PCGS and Economy still has them back to me in 4-6 weeks. My collection isn't particularly not high end, but I appreciate varieties and errors, and ANACS are great with these. I'm in no hurry to sell though, so I can be patient and wait months for the right special to come around, and it mostly done for protection when my kids ask to hold one of daddy's and in the future when I kick the can, they have starting point.
Even if you don't have a macro lens, your phone might be good enough that the community can get you on the right pathway. We await some pics!

Many people are just slab happy. For some reason they think a coin in a slab is worth more.
