Apparently a coin was found in the time capsule placed in the pedestal of the Robert E Lee statue in Virginia in 1887. It was just opened yesterday— anyone know what type of coin it was? Any guesses? https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/22/us/v...d/index.html

@zurie, your question was answered on this thread: http://goccf.com/t/407278Added: Ok yes fair pushback @zurie that this earlier thread was more speculative. I'm fine with unlocking this one for now, but perhaps we will end up merging the two thread in the end.

Thanks, @Spence. I actually hadn't seen that earlier thread. Now that the time capsule has been located and opened, I'm curious what was actually found. I guess earlier speculation was that it was a silver dollar, and an 1887 Morgan dollar makes sense, probably now with a lot of environmental damage. Anyone know of any reports of what the coin turned out to be?

The earlier post explains what was found. Included were some documents but the capsule was not watertight and the contents were wet hence they were undergoing a conservation process.

They just opened the capsule yesterday, so the earlier posts from 3 months ago were just speculation.

The 1887 was a common date, high mintage, 19.9 mil. 1887o - 11.3 mil and 1887s - 1.7 million. Regardless of that, this coin will surely be special. Would like to see it conserved, slabbed and sent to auction.

There are a few articles now that indicate that the coin found yesterday is a British silver coin. It will be interesting to see if there is a reason for them including a British coin in the time capsule.

Possibly as 1887 was the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria and they issued proof sets and redesigned all the silver and gold coins, and added a new (But ugly) effigy of the Queen.
It was the first year that people hoarded coins from in the UK and despite 1887 being an average to below average year for mintage numbers, coins dated that year are common and survive in high grades in greater numbers than other late 19th century British coins.

So it looks like it may have been a false alarm. The lead box that contained a British coin was apparently not the official time capsule buried in the monument pedestal, just a box containing documents from the construction managers. It looks like they will be resuming the search for the real time capsule, which apparently was a larger copper box. So we need to wait longer to learn the contents....

Well, they found the real time capsule and opened it today. About 60 items, including several copper coins. Also, apparently a silver dime attached to a bible. Seems like a lot of conservation work ahead. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/ins...?id=81969591
