I'm looking at a possible upgrade of the Vermont commemorative in my collection, and I would like opinions on this example that's coming up for auction soon (seller's photos). This coin is in a PCGS MS66+ holder, and my primary concern is the green toning around "STATES" on the obverse of the coin. There is also a hint on the reverse. Do you feel this is simply toning, or could this possibly be PVC residue? My first thought was toning, but the more I look at it the more I'm having my doubts. Thanks for any thoughts/opinions!

To be honest, I like the Vermont that's currently in your Registry Set, even though it's a lower grade. Awesome set, by the way.

Looks every bit MS64 Wouldn't surprise me if it is labeled MS65. But under kitty's belly there are some distracting hits when I click to enlarge.
What a set you have! I agree the one you already have is nicer.

Being there's plenty of time before this hits the block, once a lot number is assigned in about 1-1/2 weeks, I'd call the auction firm, and have one of their numismatists bring the coin to the phone. My experience is they'll be honest. I do this for coins I'm interested in where the photos look good, but about 80% of the time they have me pass. Personally, I'm not a fan of greenish toning. There are 56 of these graded 66+ by PCGS. I suggest you be patient, and wait for a nicer example that YOU like, unless the numismatist you speak with indicates this coin is special among 66+'s, and you should not let it pass. Here's mine in the same grade. We may have different tastes in eye appeal, but the point is there's plenty in this grade to choose from. By the way, the PCGS photo below is typical of why I often refer to PCGS photos as "Not So True View". You'd think you're looking at two different coins!

Thank you very much for your thoughts, they are very helpful. As I was already hesitating quite a bit on this one, that was a big indicator that I should take a pass, which is what I'll do on this coin. @Winesteven - I agree that the "True View" is anything but that. Your example is a beauty regardless of which photos you look at, and which I wouldn't have hesitated at if it was the one up for auction! As you said, there are a number of these at this grade out there, so I should bide my time to wait for the one which comes along and which I have no hesitation in acquiring. And, for TNG and captainrich, I appreciate your kind remarks on my registry set. Classic commemoratives went from being a little side hobby of mine back about 8 years ago to a real passion now.

I'm late to the party on this one, but agree with others that the coin shown is not a choice example of an MS-66+ coin - such a lofty grade, quite frankly, is a surprise. Quote: my primary concern is the green toning around "STATES" on the obverse of the coin. There is also a hint on the reverse. Do you feel this is simply toning, or could this possibly be PVC residue? From the images, I don't think the coloring is due to PVC damage - I believe it to be toning. I think you've made a good decision by passing on this one - nicer examples exist! You'll find one!

As a side note, unfortunately there are many in our hobby that "bash" Classic Silver Commems, by saying all they do is go down in price. But that's NOT true! As a generalization, they "bottomed out" about six years ago or so, and now prices have started rising. As an example, the MS66+ Vermont mentioned in the OP is currently shown in the PCGS Price Guide as $1,350. But when I bought mine two years ago, that same Price Guide had it at only $1,150!
Those collectors who are short-sighted are missing out on collecting some of the most beautiful designs on our coinage, along with the fascinating history that accompanies these beautiful coins.

Personally, I really like the coin shown in the first two images posted. Shows character. Alas, that's just me.

Steve, I've seen that general trend, particularly for higher-end examples with superb eye appeal. When I started collecting classic commems I wasn't terribly bothered by the prices dropping or being stagnant. I just fell in love with the series! While I don't enjoy losing money, I don't consider my coins to be an investment. I don't sell coins very often other than upgraded examples or a once-in-a-blue-moon change of focus in my collecting interests. The vast bulk of my coin and currency collections will be with me until I'm gone .

I'm pleased to learn that you are taking a pass on this example. Agree that for the grade much nicer coins can be found. Best of wishes on your search.

I fully agree on each of the five points mentioned, and my collecting behavior is fully reflected by each of those points. My comment about pricing was just an observation of the current market, with an intention of providing information. Keep up with your beautiful set! Steve
