Looks like the L is missing. Or extremely worn down but I can't see trace of it. Any other opinions?

Looks to me like a casualty of extreme wear.

The L is right against the rim so the wear on the rim has worn the L with it.

Or a sanded down coin. If it was altered, the coin should be a bit lighter in weight? A reverse image would show if it was squeezed or not.
