I have a 1981 D penny that I found in change a long time ago and now that Iv become serious into collecting and searching through coins, I'm reaching out to learn more about this and if it's worth keeping. The coin looks as if it was struck through thin fabric, has the most radical doubling as the 1983 DDR except it kinda foreshadows the letters instead of doubles them, also has the most beautiful toning Iv ever seen before. Can someone help explain what this is or how it became like this?
to CCF. Please properly crop and rotate photos before posting...thanks. Your coin is not a struck through fabric and not a DDR=doubled die reverse. Let's wait for a pro or two to chime in, but I think it is a VLDS=very late die struck coin. Here is a good site to put in your http://www.error-ref.com/ John1
Die Deterioration may be present. Too, it looks like a brief exposure to an acidic environment (emphasis on brief) may be contributing to the look. Would like to see the coin in-hand.
Thanks Dearborn. Thank you too john1 and I'll do better on the cropping and rotation of images. I could do this much better on a computer and it's my first time posting images on a post in this format and of this type on a smart phone. I should be better at this considering I'm only 28 and grew up in a world of technology. I'm new to the whole searching and collecting of US coins but had interest since I was a kid and won a Ike half dollar in a claw machine when I was 6 or 7 and still have it to this day. Just a few months ago I got neck deep into this and it's almost become an addiction and don't wanna stop. I understand now why collectors, collect. It's so fascinating and the more I learn, the more I want to go deeper down this rabbit hole. I bought a coin lot on ebay twice in the past month and the first one had a 1964 P dime with the doubled die reverse and I'm still searching through the second and I'm learning that most of them are worthless and people with try to get out on you. The penny is gorgeous and I acquired it about 7 months ago when I looked through my change and saw the beautiful toning on the penny and also saw that it was different and Iv been scouring the web, reading articles, and learning all that I can about collecting and I love this with a passion. Thanks to you jbuck and to you too ijn1944. Ijn1944, the coin is very pretty and the way the coin is minted, you would think that there would be more than just one of these or more online. I have scoured the web looking for another 1981D but can't find one that looks anything like this anywhere
