A while ago I bought a gun safe to store my coins in. Large...5 feet tall and heavy. I figured I'd use the existing shelving inside the safe. I came home and found that the top shelf had collapsed down onto the second "shelf" (really just made to hold guns upright in notches) where I had a few Dansco albums stored. That shoved the books down through that "shelf". Luckly the albums stopped the top shelf from damaging all my notes on the second shelf next to the albums. Picking it all up was a lot like a Jinga game. A little damage to the albums and scratches on the 2x2 boxes...thats it. Whew!. Better send me at least half of that top shelf to me just to be safe next time. Is that a wood shelf?

With the size of that collection i'd expect to see at least one gun in there!

Its seeing something like that that makes me realize how modest my collection really is. Impressed.

Wait, isn't it normal to put the coins at the bottom and the notes at the top so that the top shelf wouldn't collapse due to weight?

I'm glad that nothing was damaged. I suppose that I understand the weakness of those gun slots, but if one also put quite a few handguns or boxes of ammo on the top shelf, I can see the same thing happening as here. I've had easily 50 lbs of ammo per shelf, and never had a collapse--thank goodness!

Thank you for the tip I had not thought about the weight on those shelves. Are there any wood experts out there who can recommend a wood replacement that does not give off gases that will harm the coins or banknotes?

i would think any wood would be safe if it has a good coat of paint

Just got a similar gunstyle safe for my Grandfather and was thinking about dooing the same for myself. Sorry to see that happened, but thank you for sharing and posting pics will help me a lot. And I'm with Thad...If you need to lighten any of those shelves, I'd be happy to make them lighter for you.

one note on the wood you choose, I build wood vivariums, and pine, black walnut and cedar put off harsh chemicals. Hardwood like oak or birch are ok as well as fir. All wood puts off tannin so water based paint would be best, Just let cure for a couple days before confining fumes in the safe.

Quote: Are there any wood experts out there who can recommend a wood replacement that does not give off gases that will harm the coins or banknotes? A good kiln dried white pine stained to match the interior and finished with a coat of water base polyurethane and allowed to dry for a week or so would do the trick. I recommend 1" shelving with a 1"x2" support mounted to the bottom of each shelf front and back with columnar supports running top to bottom in all 4 corners. That should hold it. FYI....I built cabinets for 7 1/2 years.

Thanks for the answer
I am also considering putting in uprights to support the shelves rather than the flimsy metal brackets that hold them.
My thanks go out to acidic1 for posting this issue it is something those of us who do some safe storage should look at.
