A beat up 1944-D with a reasonably nice mint error lamination issue was gouged until it sort of looks like a 1914-D and then some additional beasting occurred (the coin was hit close to center obverse and bent concave with a final touch of cleaning of the date. 1914-D Lincoln Wheat cent counterfeit - Altered date 1944-D with lamination Report this Post to the Staff

I have seen a few of these before, but to me, a counterfeit is the whole coin is not genuine, and an alteration is only part of a coin toyed with to make it appear more valuable, but still a genuine coin underneath.
