I have purchased a few coins from a dealer that uses Photograde as its' measure. The coins I've received look very good to me, as they are mainly listed as Gem BU, Select BU and Choice BU.

My question lies in how close to the MS area these ratings are without having to submit them for slabbing.

Does that make any sense?

I think I understand what you are asking. First, BU stands for Brilliant Uncirculated, so you are already in the Mint State range of grades. This more "generic" grading I believe goes in order like this:

Choice BU is ~MS60-MS63
Select BU is ~MS63-MS64
Gem BU is ~ MS65 and up.

Someone will be along shortly to confirm and/or correct my interpretation if I am leading you astray.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!!

Photograde is a book actually that helps with how to grade coins. It is a very very good book for grading circulated coins. In my opinion it is one of the best out there, and it has some very good pictures. I can't remember the first name of the author but I think the last name is Ruddy. Sorry for being lazy, but it's downstairs and I'm eating dinner. Maybe James for a first name?

Regardless, I would highly recommend it.
