G'Day Chris its hard to tell what VAM variety it is as you need a full photo of the obverse/reverse and a close up of the date and mint mark, could be a spiked 8 variety but we need closer photos if that's O.K.

I moved this over to the grading section to get a little more exposure for you. Hope you don't mind. The pictures are actually making it pretty tough to determine a semi-accurate grade. If you can get straight on with the coin and reduce reflections, that would help. Currently, a lot can be hiding that we can't see.

having said that, this looks like a solid MS63 with lots of room to go higher with better pics. The reverse is fantastic with the exception of what may be on the chest. The fields look exceptionally clean. The obverse cheek area is a focal point for grading, so we will definitely need better pics. Looks pretty clean, but a lot can be hiding. Also keep in mind, cameras hide nothing, so a coin in hand can look much better than it's photo per se.

Another consideration is that 1881-S's come in very high grades, so there's room for a TPG to be more lenient than it might be with a more conditionally-rare coin. I agree with my fellow Mod - MS63 is almost certain, and 64 likely.
