Seen something similar before but can't remember what it was. I think it's legit because the "islands of copper". Can anyone refresh my memory or explain what's going on here? Thanks

Looks like some kind of circulation staining, not an error or variety.

Thanks John1. Last pic shows a circle around the copper. There's also clear delineation between the copper and nickel. I could be wrong. Coin is dirty but looks like it could be an error if my memory serves me correctly

Let's wait for a pro or two to chime in. I am thinking some kind of acidic liquid though.

Your input appreciated regardless. People do all types of things to coins. Another thing that made me think it may be an error is the straight line by the d in God. Looks like a missing piece of clad. Not sure though

But nickels are not clad. They are 75% copper and 25% nickel. So it might just be a discoloration or stain. If it rubs off, then it is surface. If it is into the planchet, it will not rub off. (chances are its not and it's a stain)

Fun fact, nickels are 75% copper. Lots of environmental damage can cause the copper atoms to concentrate at the surface layer of the coin, which is what this is an example of. Not a mint error.

Edit: lol, looks like Coop beat me to the fun fact.

Thanks coop and SamCoin. I was thinking the copper may have migrated to the surface or something like that but wasn't sure. When I seen these "rolling lines" I start thinking improper annealing. This has copper and roller lines. When I went to cash in some change this was in the reject bin after being rejected 2x with a lot of other coins
