Curious about a 1972 Dime I have that looks like a normal dime except it has what appears to be a penny's side or edge. the entire edge is brown smooth copper looking and the thickness/width of a penny. The edge sticks out further than the flat surface of the coin. Also, I have a 1986 penny that looks like it is of steel, aluminum or nickel stock. I read that could be cause someone used acid to eat away the copper coating or put an overlay on it, but also read it could be a mint error valuing $100. How does one determine which.

Thoughts? thanks

Your dime appears damaged. I have seen dimes similar to yours that had edge damage from someone pounding the edge, causing a flat look where the copper will show. As far as your LMC, it looks plated. You can always weigh the coins but I do believe your coins are just that.

Your dime has spent some time rolling around in a dryer causing the edge to flatten out. the cent has been plated.

Looks like it got stuck in a commercial clothes dryer.

How Disappointing, I've kept this thing for 30 years :) A dryer!

And how do you tell on the penny it was plated, and didn't skip a step in the minting process?

Coins that are plated have that overly shiny, thick, relatively consistent, coated look to them while coins struck on planchets that missed the plating process still have a surface that has flow lines as a normal cent would. The coloring is different on a coin that does not have the copper plating on it.
