So, over 10 years ago I posted the thread linked below about my grandfather's coin collection. It was a really fun thread to do and experience. I thought the story was over after searching the largest of three oil cans only to find it 99% full of bicentennial quarters. I set the last two oils cans aside for posterity thinking they housed the same. Fast forward to today! I decided to look closely through the coin slot and to my surprise I saw one silver edge amongst the multitude of (most likely) bicentennial quarters. Well, I'm fishing coins out today and to my surprise there have been some fun surprises! Just getting started but I am fascinated by the finds, what was in circulation, and what a coin collector would find worthy of setting aside. Please read the original thread with the link below (hope it works) or search search for the title 'poppy's collection found oil cans' I'll get to work fishing the coins out and see what we find! http://goccf.com/t/61344Update - link doesn't work, maybe the mods can help. I emailed jbuck to try and bring the thread back but you can still find it by searching the title. Edited by captainkurt 01/08/2022 3:11 pm

So it was a 1943 war cent that caught my eye and started me digging. But soon to follow was a 64 quarter! This can is definitely different then the first big one I searched all those years back. Mostly because the coins are much closer to mint state and of course because there is actually silver in this one!

Very cool. If you have Denver mint bicentennial quarters, be sure to check for the famous FS-101 DDO.

Most of them are Philadelphia, especially in this can as they are all mint state or close to it. The can from the previous thread had a few stacks of Denver and I still have not searched them for the variety yet. Maybe I'll get to that with this thread. For those wanting to read the previous thread it can still be searched on this forum. Search the title 'poppy's collection found oil cans'

It took some time to fish all these out of the can without damaging it. Not too much of value but I wish we could find some of this in circulation today! Some of the bicentennials look to be gem quality. A couple really nice condition cents from the 60's, some wheats, three 90% ers and a 40% er. I'll get working on the next can today.

Question -- Were the interiors of the oil cans free of petroleum residue?

They were designed as coin banks with slots already in the tops so yes, clean. I looked them up on ebay and they could be worth more then the contents! Saw one listed for $45!!!

The last can started a bit slow. More BU 1776-1976 with a couple gems. A really nice '67 and a few wheats. Will have more to post soon.

Here are the last couple photos of what I found. Although it is cool to see what was available in circulation 50 years ago it was still possible to find most of these coins when I was coin roll searching 10 years ago, aside from silver quarters. The final haul. I hope one day when I go back through my grandfathers entire haul I will be able to update more finds. There are so many Indians and wheats to go through to preserve and search through. Thanx for letting me share and continue this 10 year long journey!

That looks like a very fun coin search and I like your results. Nothing of tremendous value but still a good deal when you find some silver and wheats in very good condition.
