Seller says "choice AU" and asking AU50 money but I see a borderline VF35-EF40, possibly details. Curious what others think. Thanks.

I'm at EF-45 tops but not a fan of the marks in the upper right obverse field.

Well, with you that this is not AU, but more likely XF-40 as you are thinking. I am not seeing anything that would be making this details to my eyes ...

I was concerned about possibly old toned-in scratches in front of the eyes and nose.

Not an AU coin. EF sharpness. What's going on the reverse left of the eagle's wing?

Quote: What's going on the reverse left of the eagle's wing? Yes that and obverse right field (especially below chin), etc give me pause about the originality of the surfaces. The reverse wear in the wings is what pushes it borderline 35 for me. Thanks for replies so far.

XF Details IMO. Surfaces look slightly granular. Big red flag on the reverse fields below the eagles right wing surrounding UN in UNITED and QU in QUARTER. Looks like some terminal toning was removed and has since retoned, but surfaces do not look original to me.

Until there is some universal standard applied to coin photos, assessing surface authenticity from a pic is never going to a sure thing.
A harsh cleaning may be obvious, but for coin like this you'd need a loop or a scope to look for directional rubs and/or dipping residue before you could made a decision. The coloring isn't enough to condemn it unless it is recognizably fake.
At first blush, the reverse toning certainly raises questions, but toned coins circulated after several years in storage can also retain their color. The obv scratches are less than minor and wouldn't yield a details grade.
There is some high-point wear. Count me in at XF-40.

EF45 looking problem free regarding cleaning but might be worth a continuing hunt for a coin with less detractions on the obverse mirrors.

I am at VF35-XF40. Maybe Details but hard to say with these pics.

Thanks for the opinions, looks like we're split on details or not. The thick black crud in the crannies makes me afraid that it once covered larger areas. Seller has several others with the same. It has a variety I'm looking for which has been tough to find and it's been listed for almost 3 months so I might get a good deal, but I'm leaning towards waiting it out. I'd much prefer a certified AU and pay more.
