Panzaldi,
I would suspect those marks down by the date are indicative of all the coins I have shown on this discussion forum in that they were kept unprotected in a bank bag for about 100 years. There were about 500 coins of varying quality, but all knocking against each other. I know they were collected by a relative starting around 1840 when he came to America. I only took them out and put them in 2 x 2's or in the plastic discs in the last 2 years. It's hard to understand why he collected the coins as he didn't do anything to protect them and also there are about 150 coins that are so worn they are just melt value. Below is a picture of all the Shield nickels that I cannot read a date or much else. There were only about 10 Shield nickels that have collector value which I have already protected. I doubt that any of the coins were ever cleaned, they have been in my custody about 50 years now and I never cleaned any of them.
