Please put this information at the top so it won't get missed. Die cracks and overpolishing are not considered errors. The slight MAD would be a minor error. Report this Post to the Staff

Collects82 Pillar of the Community United States 1316 Posts	Posted 01/15/2022 11:36 am Good eye to spot all the stuff going on with this coin. Its unusual, no doubt. I think what you have here is a very late die state more than an error. However, none of these issues are extreme or in particular demand. So in its circulated state, there isn't the kind of premium that's going to drive much of a $. It's the sort of thing you can put into a 2x2 in your album and share a story with, maybe if you have a network of other cherry pickers, you have something for low end trading. Die cracks aren't really an error. Some folks consider them a variety. But the mint didn't make a mistake. The die just got old and formed a couple cracks, but they continued using it to get a little more production before putting a new one in. Misaligned dies (MAD) such as this are minor and rather common. Ones that collectors take note of are off maybe 5-10% and start to run into lettering. This is just sort of within the mint's quality tolerance as they don't put the effort into MS70 on every die setup for circulation strikes. They have billions of pressings to achieve every year. The ghostly appearance of Lincoln from the grease or over-polishing is interesting, especially with the bold lettering. I'm not expert enough to tell which it was. But the mint chose to use the die so I consider it more of a die state than an error. "Errors" are more like off center, double strikes, broadstrikes, capped dies where something actually unintentional happened - It was a mistake. From the Heritage Auctions website: Error -- A numismatic item that unintentionally varies from the norm. Overdates and overmintmarks are not considered errors since they were done intentionally. Other die-cutting "mistakes" are considered errors. Double[d] dies, planchet clips, and off-metal strikings are also considered errors. Report this Post to the Staff

Die cracks are a type of die event, not an error either. Ditto for overpolishing. Something like this is pretty common. I'd put it in the category of "save it if you like it, but feel safe spending it if you want." Report this Post to the Staff

Many of them have 2, 3, and even 4 die cracks on the corners of the memorial. No so many over polished in the group. They will sell for about $1 on ebay. Report this Post to the Staff
