1974 Error Cinco Centavos - Coin Community Forum

It could be an off-metal strike, but much more likely is that it was plated by someone after leaving the mint. The answers to those two questions should help us figure it out for you. Thx. It seems to be a bit light, at least compared with what is posted on numista: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces3152.html I think that aftermarket plating is still the most likely reason, but you could save in a 2x2 until you get a good enough scale to perform a specific gravity test. Sap Moderator Australia 16842 Posts	Posted 01/17/2022 6:17 pm Examine both sides, and the rim, carefully. Look for a small brown spot where the plating is missing. Most "home-made" electroplated coins have a small gap in the plating, where the wire was attached to the coin. It's possible to plate a coin in such a way as to not leave a gap, but it's not easy. Since all modern Mexican coins have the eagle-on-cactus national symbol on them, I suspect someone plated this coin to try to make it look like a newer coin from the post-1992 new peso era.
