It was the same in Oz. in the early 1960's,some of the 'ádvice' offered in Mags./Books/Newspapers was just riciculous but settled down as we headed to Decimal Currency. The first 2 editions of 'Australian Coin Çhart' advocated the cleaning of Coins and the recipe to do same. Luckily we had a Coin/Stamp dealer for a period a week in Social Studies and he was scathing in his opinion of the 'self appointed' Coin experts appearing everywhere as we headed to Decimal Currency.
