Cherry picking at all levels is absolutely fair game .
Being dishonest is not and we all have to be aware of
our own moral compass.
Having dealt coins for a very very long time you
quickly find that knowledge is power and if employed
honestly can make you a lot of money .
A quick story , the late RC Willey ( Haxby Willey catalogue ) was a
frequent customer of mine when I owned Pacific Coin Centre Ltd.
in Victoria BC . He would help me on some tricky ancients and I would
give him first shot if anything excited him . We became friends quickly
and he was always welcome . To all who knew him , he was highly
intelligent and very knowledgeable.
One day after one of my overseas buying trips he came to see me
and wanted to look through junk boxes . I had 3 , 5 and 10 dollar
boxes . Anything I tossed in them was fair game as it was MY duty
to figure it all out .
He found a Colonial token in the 10 Dollar box , which after his research
turned out to be worth around a thousand dollars . He told me all about
his great and fortunate find a few months later .
About a year later Bob died and I was honoured to be the one who sold
his rather extensive collection .
I still smile when I think about the incident and the later result .
When a knowledgeable collector " Cherry picks" a dealer it is fair game as
far as I am concerned . When a dealer lies to a collector about what they have
totally dishonest .

I am less concerned about instances where you buy a coin at a fair price (for both buyer and seller) and you do the research that proves that it is rarer, and/or more valuable than previously thought. I feel I have done that with many coins I own.

Personally, I have more of a problem taking advantage of a situation where the seller fails to realize what he has on coins that have already been catalogued. In other words, where he just missed it on something that most would see.

@Bosox. I agree with you. I remember when I own a cafeteria in an big Montreal hospital. I was there (good for the lady). The cashier come to see me and show me, I remember an sovereign 1917C and ask if it is legal coin. I was to see the lady. The bill was around 12$ and her was there with the husband on the last days and two days before her pension enter in the bank. I return the coins telling what it is and give a permanent voucher of 25$ to use any day any time. I think this is to be fair on business.

I bayed many coins or paper money of the price was ask, even was ridiculous down. I was just asking if the price ask it is what really he want, and then I payed. Manny was from dealers which to day are in my friends circle.
