I received an interesting e-mail from Spink today. In their upcoming auction, they're selling a hyper-rare Henry III gold penny issued in 1257. Bidding now stands at £260,000. Lovely coin!

Here's the part that has my head spinning a bit, as I confess I don't fully understand the concept or its pros and cons. As a related lot, Spink is also selling ownership of an NFT, or "non-fungible token." It's not a "token" like the exonumia I collect, but rather it's an eight-second video clip of the Henry III gold coin, along with all the ownership and commercial rights that attach to it.

Bidding for the NFT opened at £5 and is now up to £420!

And here's the lot description at Spink.

Can someone reply with an explanation as to why anyone who collects coins would buy this? Is there a secondary market of NFT investors out there? I obviously haven't spend enough time researching and/or contemplating cryptocurrency, blockchain, and NFT's, but if Spink is getting into this field -- and so is Melania Trump! -- maybe there's something to it? For some folks, that is...I'm sticking to my Regency Period copper and silver tokens.

This feels just as gimmicky as all the other NFTs out there, but people are willing to pay so go Spink, make money where you can I guess

NFTs are another form of crypto- investing. They're meant to be "one of a kind" in the sense that only one person truly "owns" the original and all others are copies, but in a digital sense.

I don't fully know if there is truly a market, I've heard that much of the hype is people self-buying to artificially inflate values. Easy to do when lots of NFT sales happen in bitcoin and ethereum.

Not a field I have much interest in, but some have made it rich easily. Can't fault that, some people have money to blow

Wonder if NFT items will be relevant in a post apocalyptic world.

@dalt, I got your message about moving this thread. The coin in question was issued in the 13th Century which means that it solidly fits in the ancients/medieval subforum. I understand that you are mainly asking about NFTs and not this specific coin, but the thread definitely doesn't belong in the world coin subforum. With that said @echizento is the lead on this subforum, so I will defer to his judgement on where your thread best belongs.
