Hey all,

I was pleasantly surprised to find one of these 'varieties' with part of the reverse initials covered by an 'extra leaf'. I don't think I see anything else out of the ordinary but figured I'd post to make sure. I hope the full pic of the reverse is visible enough to scan. Many thanks!

*Chip, not Cud...thanks ijn and Dearborn

Cuds are usually associated directly with rim features. You may be looking at a die chip.

Yup, looks like a chip that took out the designers initials.

Here is an image of my coin and what it should look like normally.

I had an uncirculated roll of these quarters. Probably 10% had this chip. Some are minor and others cover the initials completely. I researched and found that the cactus plants above the date would sometimes cover part of the date with a large die chip. None of mine had the date chip.

I haven't seen a lot of examples online. Die chips don't carry a lot of value, but I like this one because it infringes on the designers initials. Nice find!

Quite common, but I do set them aside as this is a popular die event that will sell on ebay (mostly for the catchy name, I suspect, since it's incredibly minor and of little numismatic significance)
