I am very new to coin collecting. I found this 1976 bicentennial quarter in one of my old purses. I haven't used the purse in several years. Long before I knew about error coins. Please give me some opinions so I appear to know what I have. Thanks a bunch!

Ok thank you silviosi! Just curious, what kind of damage causes the lettering to appear to be melting? I've been researching error coins and thought for sure the chunk out of the hair was a Cud error. BUT this is def a learning experience for me!

@shay, first welcome to CCF. Second, with regard to the lettering on this coin, this looks like mechanical damage to me (as opposed to heat, chemical, environmental, etc).

Yes, severe post-strike damage. Not an error coin, unfortunately.

Rule of thumb: if you can think of any way that the effect you're seeing on a coin could be produced through damage rather than through an error in the minting process, then it's just damage.
