Whats the going rate for avg circ Barber halves these days. I just got back from my local dealer. I really don't care for this guy but when it comes to filling holes in my type set he's the guy in the area. Anywho he has a few bags of Barber halves Avg Circ $50 face for $495. I always stay 9-20xface on silver but I don't really buy much quanity. If I remember correctly Barbers are usually $1200 plus for a $100 bag.

I would pay 10x face on Barber halves. I wouldn't expect anything great for that, but I don't find much silver for less then that.

I would say 6.50-7.00 per coin for avg circulated common Barber halves is what I've seen on EBAY- for a bulk lot. His price is good and I'd be all over that, especially with silver creeping back up...

$4.95 per coin? I agree, I'd be all over that like bread on butter.

Sounds like a deal to me. Numismedia quotes $12 for common dates in G4. You'd be getting them for less than half that. The melt value of the silver alone is over $4 per coin I believe - and junk silver has been selling for a premium lately with the stock market job market housing market commodities market tanking lately.

Of course, there's always the question of whether you need 100 old barbers sitting around your house. So, while it might be a good deal, it'd be some work to come out ahead on the deal unless you just want to collect them or have the silver on hand.

Here's the Numismedia link:

Thanks, it gives me another reason to head to the coin shop on Friday. Not that I really need one.

It sounds like a decent deal. Just be aware that when the term "Avg Circ" is used in reference to Barber halves, it usually means AG and problem coins. I would expect problem-free G-4 and better examples to be the exception, rather than the rule.

I would buy them and sell the extras on the bay. :) Cost $4.95 sell for $6-$.50 fees for $5.50 or $.55 cent profit per coin sold. The fees might be lower if you sold them by the roll (20 coins).

I bet you net out most of the commons below melt.

You could also offer some here, once you meet the qualifications to sell here.

Sounds like a great deal to me... I would buy all of them at his asking price. Even if they turn out to be all culls or AG, it's still a pretty good deal.

10X face for Barber half dollars right now is a good price, in fact excellent.
They are rarely sold for junk silver any more.

Unless they are dogs, go for it.

Agree 100% with Treashunt. However, you do want to avoid ones that are really, really worn down. So if you are getting them for 10x face, make sure there isn't a reason for it!
