It looks to me as if the penny has received a hit that has displaced the metal, or maybe someone deliberately tried to gouge it. I'm pretty sure this is PMD (post-mint damage) rather than an error.

Not an error it is PMD.
That couldn't happen during the striking of the coin.

We assume you're talking about the damage on and to the left of the digit "1"? it's not an error. It's been hit hard by something hard, sharp and pointy, like a chisel or screwdriver. The sharp point has gouged out some of the metal, and the resulting pile of gouged-out metal is sitting over to the left of the gouge.

Seem to be an awful lot of "new" members posting so called rarities and error coins that turn out to be nothing, we need some quality control as regards the new member vetting.
